A light house is always a place that not only sea travelers want to reach but the general people are curious to visit it too. The Union Minister of shipping Shri G.K. Vasan through his initiative has ensured that the Chennai Lighthouse now becomes accessible to the local people and other tourists. Opening it to the people and inaugurating a lighthouse technical museum in Chennai this morning, the minister hoped that the enlightened general public would take care not to damage the state of the art system which provides for vital navigational safety and the related equipment which is worth crores of rupees.
The technical museum traces the evolution of the lighthouse establishment in India. It displays vintage to the most modern lighthouse equipment. The visitors to this technical museum will have a clear insight on the various facets of lighthouse engineering.
Mr. Vasan said that it is proposed to engage the Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships (DGLL) in promotion of tourism in lighthouses, most of which are located in beautiful and scenic locations. He said that his ministry proposes to choose 15 lighthouses under this Scheme, Chennai being one of them. This will make the working of DGLL more challenging as well as charming, the minister added.
